Ireland have finished in 10th place after losing out to Germany in a tense final game at the World Lacrosse Championships. This was a nip and tuck affair between 2 closely matched teams and Ireland outscored Germany in the 1st and 3rd quarters but in the end, the damage was done in the 2nd quarter, during which Germany scored 3 unanswered goals.
Brian Gillis scored a hat trick to win The Physio Company’s MVP award and other scorers for Ireland included Tom Riley, Kris Prior and Michael Shea with a goal apiece but it wasn’t enough. Simon Goiurmetakis and Wolfgang Griessel both struck at key moments to ensure that there was just enough daylight between the teams to secure the victory for Germany.
Ireland emerge from the tournament with great credit however and will be far from disappointed with their performances. Of their 8 games here in Denver, they were victorious in 6, beating the likes of France, Switzerland, Czech Republic and New Zealand on the way. Ireland now head home having uncovered some great new talent who have performed on the biggest stage in World Lacrosse and the future for this team and for the game in Ireland is looking positive. We at The Physio Company are extremely proud of their efforts!
